The Magic Lantern
I am a Urbana Arts Grants 2018 recipient for my animation project, The Magic Lantern.
The Magic Lantern is an ongoing series of interactive animation projects which explore
the art of animation through various, animation-viewing contraptions of the old and the new.
On March 25th, 2019, I presented animation and interacted with the medium in a live-audience demo - zoetrope, praxinoscope, turntable zoetrope, and contraptions I have modified for the project.
The project was in part funded by Urbana Public Arts and City of Urbana.

Paper cut-out animation composed of 32 drawings spinning at 45rpm on a record player.
The footage was shot at 24fps. The drawings were hand-drawn, then edited digitally in Photoshop.
This is a physical zoetrope sculpture spinning on a turntable. The animation is not visible and appear as a blur to the naked eye. The video clip was recorded at 24 FPS and turntable speed at 45 RPM. It is the synchronicity of the number of drawings, the recorded frame rate, and the speed of the turntable that creates the illusion of life.
