“We are so thrilled that a new Urbana Arts & Culture Program Murals on Glass selected work has been installed on the north east corner windows of downtown parking garage! Congratulations to EKAH (Steampunk Grub) for being selected for this new cycle of Murals on Glass! 'The Cardinal Rabbit' (graphite & digital color)”
This illustration is an exploration and revisiting of my Korean roots and culture through symbols and colors of Korea. Rabbit is an animal often associated with the moon in Korea because it is said to appear on the surface of a full moon as a silhouette. Rabbit also appears in various traditional Korean folklore. The colors in this illustration are commonly found in traditional Korean clothing, food, and decorations. “Saekdong” in Korean means multi-colored. Korean children typically wear saekdong hanbok on holidays. Children's hanboks were typically made with remnants of fabrics which resulted in saekdong. “Obangsaek” (five direction colors) were also an inspiration for the title and the color scheme. Apart from the oblivious Korean motifs and symbolism, the piece is also a celebration of multi-colors coexisting together in harmony.
